‘Balladen om Marie’ filming
Dear reader. I know you are there, because even though there has not been anything on this website other then my solo remembrance in 2009 of the day, 100 years ago, that Krøyer passed away, I have daily many visitors. The reason to finally change this is the current filming and August 2012 release of the Danish movie ‘Balladen om Marie’, in English ‘The Passion of Marie’. Let’s hope Nordisk Film will do something about the English title, as it doomed to end up in the foreign film section, seen only by people who like to think they have cultural awareness. I will do some suggestions for a better title on another day. I believe you should leave out the word “Marie” all together. The potential viewer doesn’t know Marie. The viewer doesn’t care about Marie. Though it might attract feminists. Let’s hope it doesn’t become a “women’s pamphlet”.
Anyway, about the film. Or actually, the story behind that I want to share. About the film you can read more here, at the DFI (Danish Film Institute website). There is an interesting story that should be shared. In 2005 I was asked to be part of Reboot 05, a brain storming weekend on how to stimulate tourism in North Jutland. I came there excited to share my idea of a film on the life of P.S. Krøyer, because as a foreigner (I’m Dutch), I was surprised that Krøyer wasn’t used as a landmark to promote the country. Only as a kind of local celebrity. His life is full of drama. This idea was welcomed by the group and they suggested Bille August to be the director. The proposal was presented at the end of the event. The partners of North Jutland didn’t agreed and the idea was not part of the projects that they would continue with. Our contact with Nordisk Film revealed they were already doing some documentary about the group of painters of Skagen. We spoke with Anna von Lowzow, who was very much interested in the idea of making a movie about the painters from Skagen and Krøyer. Six years later, today, I discovered Nordisk Film is going to realise the film. I don’t know if I/we set them on this track. I think it became more a natural evolution of the idea of the documentary they thought about making in 2005, with maybe some “direction pointing” from our side, but it is very interesting to see that indeed Bille August, as proposed, is doing his first movie since 1987 (Pelle the Conquerer) in Denmark. What a coincidence... Again, I’m not blaming anyone of stealing an idea, as every one reading the life of Krøyer should be able to see the movie in that, it’s just nice to know I was right.
The idea of having an executable vision, triggered my 15 years desire to make an animation short about the life of Krøyer. Time and the situation was never there to accomplish this, yet, but I still am able to grab more moments to work on it. Even if it is on the tube. So dear reader, if you have the power to realise this much faster with financial support so I can take time off from work, I will listen.

That’s it for today. I promise I will be back soon.
So long.
